Course resolutions

The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).

These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2019, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. Current versions of all policies are available from the Policy Register:

2ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Attendance pattern

The attendance pattern for the Bachelor of Science is full time or part time according to candidate choice. The attendance pattern for the Master of Mathematical Sciences is full time or part time according to candidate choice.

3ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Streams

(1)Ìý The Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Master of Mathematical Sciences is a vertically integrated degree and is only available in the following streams:

(a) Advanced

(b) Dalyell

(2) Completion of the Advanced stream is a requirement of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Master of Mathematical Sciences. The requirements for completion of the Advanced stream are in Table A for the Bachelor of Science and as specified in Clause 6(3)(a).ÌýThe units contributing to the Advanced stream requirements must be taken within one of the majors embedded in the Mathematical Sciences program. The requirements for the completion of the Dalyell stream are in Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees and Part 6 of these resolutions.

4ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Masters type

The Masters degree in these resolutions is an Advanced Learning Master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy 2021.

5ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Admission to candidature

(1) Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. Details of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and Coursework Policy 2021.

(2)ÌýAdmission to the Dalyell Stream requires achievement of a minimum tertiary admission rank (ATAR) set by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream, or equivalent.

6ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Requirements for award

(1) The units of study that may be taken for the course are set out in:

(a) Table A for the Bachelor of Science and;

(b) Table S of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees; and

(c) Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees;

(d) for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees, and

(e) The Table of units for the Master of Mathematical Sciences from the Faculty of Science

(2) In these resolutions, except where otherwise specified, Table A, Table S, Table O and Table D mean Table A, Table S, Table O and Table D as specified here.

(3) To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) and Master of Mathematical Sciences, a candidate must successfully complete 216 credit points, comprising:

(a) 144 credit points to qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Science as specified in the resolutions for the Bachelor of Science, including:

(i)Ìý 12 credit points of units of study, as set out in Table A Degree Core (students may count the units from their major(s) or minor(s) to fulfil this requirement); and

(ii) 6 additional credit points of science core units of study (excluding units listed in the Table A Degree Core) as set out in Table A (students may count the units from their major(s) or minor(s) to fulfil this requirement); and

(iii) 66 credit points of the Mathematical Sciences program as defined in Table A. These must include 24 credit points of advanced units completed at the 2000- and 3000-level within the major embedded in the Mathematical Sciences program and as specified in the requirements for the Table A Advanced stream, and

(iv) A minor (36 credit points) or second major (48 credit points) as defined in Table A or Table S,

(v) For students not enrolled in the Dalyell stream, a minimum of 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as listed in Table O.

(vi) For students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, a minimum of 12 credit points of Dalyell units of study as specified in Table D.

(vii) Students previously but no longer enrolled in the Dalyell stream who have completed at least 6 credit points of Dalyell units of study are not required to complete any units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O.

(viii) Where appropriate, elective units from Table A, Table S, Table O or for students in the Dalyell stream, Table D; and

(ix)Ìý If enrolled in a stream, complete the requirements for the stream as specified in Table A or Table D.

(b) 72 credit points to qualify for the award of the Master of Mathematical Sciences as specified in the Table of units for the Master of Mathematical Sciences from the Faculty of Science including:

(i) No more than 24 credit points of 3000 level electives; and

(ii) No more than 48 credit points of 4000 level electives: and

(iii) At least 12 credit points of 5000 level electives, and

(iv)Ìý 24 credit points of research core project units

7ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Progression rules

(1)ÌýProgression within the Advanced Stream:

(a) Candidates must achieve a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65.0 calculated at the conclusion of each 48 credit-point block to continue in the Advanced Stream.

(b) Failure to maintain the minimum progression requirements will result in candidates being transferred from the integrated degree program to a Bachelor of Science degree with full credit for all units of study successfully completed.

(2)ÌýProgression within the Dalyell Stream

(a) With the permission of the Dalyell coordinator of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, candidates in the Dalyell Stream may attempt units of study at higher levels than the usual sequence.

(b)ÌýÌýCandidates must achieve a Cross-Semester Average Mark (CSAM) at a level determined by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream in each year of study or over each 48 credit point block to continue in the Dalyell Stream. Candidates who do not maintain a CSAM at the level determined by joint agreement of the Deans and Heads of School and Deans of University schools of all the faculties and University schools administering degrees offering the Dalyell Stream may continue in any other major, minor, program or stream into which they were admitted, but will not remain in the Dalyell Stream.

(c) Candidates enrolled in the Dalyell stream who do not satisfy requirements for the Dalyell stream but who otherwise meet requirements for the award course in which they are enrolled will graduate from the award course without the Dalyell stream. Students may not study units additional to the maximum credit points for their award course except with the approval of the Associate Dean.

(3)ÌýProgression to the Master of Mathematical Sciences:

(a) The requirement for progression to the Master of Mathematical Sciences is completion of the requirements in 6(3)(a) with at least a distinction average in 24 credit points of 3000 level units across any majors allowed in the Mathematical Science program as defined in Science Table A.

(b) Failure to maintain the minimum progression requirements will result in candidates being transferred from the integrated degree program to a Bachelor of Science degree with full credit for all units of study successfully completed.

(4)ÌýProgression within the Master of Mathematical Sciences

(a) Progression within the Master of Mathematical Sciences is as specified in the resolutions for the Master of Mathematical Sciences.

8ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Award of the degree

(1) The Bachelor of Science is awarded as a Pass degree.

(2) The Master of Mathematical Sciences is awarded as a Pass degree only.

9ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Course transfer

A student may abandon this course and elect to complete the Bachelor of Science in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree. Completion of the Master of Mathematical Sciences in the future will require a new application for admission to that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

10ÌýÌýÌý Transitional provisions

(1)Ìý These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2025.

(2)Ìý Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2025 should complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.

3ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Streams

(1)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The Bachelor of Science (Advanced)/Master of Mathematical Sciences is a vertically integrated degree and is only available in the following streams:

(2)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Completion of the Advanced stream is a requirement of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced)/Master of Mathematical Sciences. The requirements for completion of the Advanced stream are in Table A for the Bachelor of Science and Part 6 of these resolutions. The units contributing to the Advanced stream requirements must be taken within one of the majors embedded in the Mathematical Sciences program. The requirements for the completion of the Dalyell stream are in Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees and Part 6 of these resolutions.

4ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Masters type

The masters degree in these resolutions is an Advanced Learning Master's course, as defined by the Coursework Policy.

(c)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Table O of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees;

(d)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý for students enrolled in the Dalyell stream, Table D of the Shared Pool for Undergraduate Degrees, and

(e)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The Table of units for the Master of Mathematical Sciences from the Faculty of Science

(2)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý In these resolutions, except where otherwise specified, Table A, Table S, Table O and Table D mean Table A, Table S, Table O and Table D as specified here.

(3)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Science (Advanced)/Master of Mathematical Sciences, a candidate must successfully complete 216 credit points, comprising:

(a)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 144 credit points to qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Science as specified in the resolutions for the Bachelor of Science, including:

(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 12 credit points of units of study, as set out in Table A Degree Core (students may count the units from their major(s) or minor(s) to fulfil this requirement); and

(ii)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 6 additional credit points of science core units of study (excluding units listed in the Table A Degree Core) as set out in Table A (students may count the units from their major(s) or minor(s) to fulfil this requirement); and

(iii)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 66 credit points of the Mathematical Sciences program as defined in Table A. These must include 24 credit points of advanced units completed at the 2000- and 3000-level within the major embedded in the Mathematical Sciences program and as specified in the requirements for the Table A Advanced stream, and

(iv)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý A minor (36 credit points) or second major (48 credit points) as defined in Table A or Table S,

(v)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý For students never enrolled in the Dalyell stream, 12 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as listed in Table O; and

(vi)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý For students enrolled in the Dalyell stream:

(ix)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý If enrolled in a stream, complete the requirements for the stream as specified in Table A or Table D.

(b)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý 72 credit points to qualify for the award of the Master of Mathematical Sciences as specified in the Table of units for the Master of Mathematical Sciences from the Faculty of Science including:

7ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Progression rules

Students may not study units additional to the maximum credit points for their award course except with the approval of the Associate Dean.

(3)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Progression to the Master of Mathematical Sciences:

(a)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The requirement for progression to the Masters of Mathematical Sciences is completion of the requirements in 6(3)(a) with at least a distinction average in 24 credit points of 3000 level units across any majors allowed in the Mathematical Science program as defined in Science Table A.

(b)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Failure to maintain the minimum progression requirements will result in candidates being transferred from the integrated degree program to a Bachelor of Science degree with full credit for all units of study successfully completed.

(4)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Progression within the Master of Mathematical Sciences

(a)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Progression within the Master of Mathematical Sciences is as specified in the resolutions for the Master of Mathematical Sciences.

8ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Award of the degree

(1)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The Bachelor of Science is awarded as a Pass degree.

(2)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý The Master of Mathematical Sciences is awarded as a Pass degree only.

9ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Course transfer

A student may abandon this course and elect to complete the Bachelor of Science in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree. Completion of the Master of Mathematical Sciences in the future will require a new application for admission to that course and completion in accordance with the resolutions governing that degree.

10ÌýÌýÌý Transitional provisions

(1)ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý These resolutions apply to students who commenced their candidature after 1 January 2023 and students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2023 who elect to proceed under these resolutions. Students who commenced their candidature prior to 1 January 2023 may complete the requirements in accordance with the resolutions in force at the time of their commencement.
