Postgraduate and Early to Mid-career Researcher Writing Retreat
Dedicating time and space to disconnect and reconnect through writing
Postgraduate students and early to mid-career researchers focusing on Southeast Asia are invited to attend a dedicated writing retreat. This retreat is designed to provide you with both inspiration and peer support to kick off the year.
Who:听Higher Degree by Research students and early to mid-career researchers focusing on Southeast Asia at an Australian tertiary institution
When:听9:00am-5:30pm, Wednesday 8 February to Friday 10 February 2023听
Where:听The University of听Sydney, Camperdown campus
Join us for another iteration of our much-loved writing retreat. Over three days, you will disconnect from the noise around you, reconnect with each other, and make inroads on your writing project.听
The program will include structured writing time, informal discussions and debriefing sessions, and plenty of good food and coffee.听
Expected outcomes of the retreat include:
- Making meaningful progress on an academic output
- Reflecting on your own writing habits and productivity
- Connecting with other researchers from the University of Sydney and beyond
A limited number of travel grants are available for participants travelling from outside Sydney, NSW. Please see details below.听
Attention SSEAC Residency Workshop participants and Writing Fellows: do not assume that you are automatically registered! You must register to attend the writing retreat just like any other program.

Retreat information
To be eligible for this retreat, applicants must be:
- a SSEAC member听(free to join) AND
- physically based in Australia (we cannot support international travel) AND
- currently enrolled as a Higher Degree by Research student at an Australian tertiary institution* OR an early career (within five years of conferral of your PhD) or mid-career (within five to ten years of conferral of your PhD) researcher affiliated with or employed at an Australian tertiary institution* AND
- conducting research on any of the countries within Southeast Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam), or Southeast Asia as a region AND
- fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and able to show proof of vaccination if required**
* Preference will be given to participants from the University of Sydney. A limited number of positions will be made available to participants from other Australian tertiary institutions on a first-come, first-served basis.
** A fully vaccinated person is a person who has received the number of doses required for a complete course of a COVID-19 vaccine. For further information on vaccination requirements please visit the听.听
As part of this event, SSEAC is offering a limited number of travel grants for participants travelling from outside Sydney, NSW.听These grants are subject to COVID-19 travel restrictions.

No grants will be provided to applicants based in听greater metropolitan听Sydney听(this includes the central Coast and Wollongong).
Grant recipients must attend all three days of the retreat. Grants will only to be paid AFTER the retreat in case COVID-19 restrictions prevent interstate travel.
SSEAC is not liable for any costs incurred from the cancellation of travel due to changing COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Unfortunately听we are not in a position to award grants to听participants at non-Australian institutions or participants听who are based outside of Australia. No grants will be provided to applicants based in Sydney.

Applicants will be advised whether their application has been successful听in late January, and no later than Tuesday 31 January 2023.
Please take note of this timeline, especially if you are applying from out of state. We are unable to advise of the success of your application any earlier than this. Please do not make flight and accommodation bookings unless and until you have been advised that your application is successful.

- This is a non-residential retreat (meaning no overnight stays).
- Mask-wearing is strongly encouraged during the retreat.
