Early Career Researcher Residential Writing Retreat

Dedicating time and space to write productively and with enjoyment
Early career researchers working on Southeast Asia at the University of Sydney are invited to attend SSEAC’s inaugural residential writing retreat, designed to provide you with the physical and mental space to write as part of a community of like-minded scholars from a broad range of disciplines.

Who:ÌýEarly Career Researchers with interests in Southeast Asia at the University of Sydney or with a formal research-focused affiliation with the University of Sydney
When:Ìý8:30-17:30, 5-7 February 2020

For early career researchers, finding time to commit to writing can be difficult.ÌýWhen faced with many competing obligations,Ìýwriting is often the first casualty.ÌýIn thisÌýresidentialÌýwriting retreat, we offer you the opportunity to go deep into yourÌýwritingÌýfor three solid days, providing you with the time, space and support to write.

The retreatÌýprogramÌý– whichÌýincludesÌýlarge blocks ofÌýstructured writing timeÌýinterspersed withÌýfacilitated workshops,Ìýinformal discussions and debriefingÌýsessions –Ìýwill provideÌýparticipants with:

  • A chance to connect with early career researchersÌýfromÌýacross theÌýUniversityÌý
  • An opportunityÌýto reflectÌýon your own writing habits andÌýproductivityÌý
  • Deeper insights into writing-related elements of academic life, including giving insightful and constructive feedbackÌý
  • The time and space to make meaningful progress on an academic outputÌý(grant application, article or similar)Ìý

Ten early career researchers can be accommodatedÌýin residence.ÌýAdditional places may be made available for academics with caring responsibilities that preclude overnight stays.Ìý

The selection process willÌýtake disciplinary spread, country focusÌýand gender balanceÌýinto account. Please note that submission of an applicationÌýconstitutesÌýa commitment to be availableÌýfrom 8:30-5:30 each dayÌýfor the fullÌý3 days of theÌýretreatÌý(on a residential or non-residential basis).Ìý

Retreat information

In order toÌýbe eligible to apply, you need to be:

  • Employed at the University of Sydney as an academic or postdoctoral researcherÌýORÌýhaveÌýaÌýformalÌýresearch-focusedÌýaffiliationÌýwith the University;Ìý
  • Have been awarded your PhD in the last five years, adjusted for career interruptions as per the ARC rules
  • Accommodation for two nights;
  • Breakfast for two days;
  • Lunch for three days;Ìý
  • Dinner for two days.
