You鈥檝e decided that you want to continue studying a subject you enjoyed during your final years of high school, like Biology or Chemistry or Food Technology. But, you鈥檝e realised that it鈥檚 not as simple as enrolling in a Bachelor of Biology, or Food Technology, because those exact degrees don鈥檛 exist聽
You can actually study these subjects and gain advanced knowledge by enrolling in a聽Bachelor of Science聽or a聽Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science, broad degrees that offer you a variety of subject areas to specialise in (over 40 in fact).
The first thing you鈥檝e got to know when you enrol in a Bachelor of聽Science or a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science, is that you鈥檒l study a聽major聽and a聽minor.
The technical answer: 鈥淎 defined sequence of units of study that deepens your experience in a field of study.鈥
But in plain terms, a major is a group of related subjects you鈥檒l take in order to gain specialised knowledge in a specific area.
Each subject (what we call a 鈥渦nit of study鈥) is assigned credit points.
To achieve a major, you need to complete a required 48 credit points and specific units of study within one subject area.聽Usually this is made up of 8 units of study, taken across the duration of your degree.
Minors are very similar to majors: think of them as a聽smaller聽group of related subjects that you鈥檒l take to gain knowledge in a specific area.
A minor requires fewer credit points than a major - 36 to be exact.聽Usually this is made up of 6 units of study, taken across the duration of your degree.
All of our liberal studies degrees (Bachelor of Science,听Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science,听Bachelor of Science and Bachelor聽of Advanced Studies) and specialist degrees like the聽Bachelor of Psychology聽require you to complete a major, and a minor (or second major).
