A bequest of $12.6m from聽Professor聽Aola聽Richards,聽a聽remarkable聽pioneering entomologist,聽whose聽research聽fundamentally聽shaped our knowledge of Australasian insect聽fauna,聽is creating聽the聽Aola聽Richards聽Sydney Insect Hub聽at the University of Sydney.聽

鈥淧rofessor聽Richards, the first woman聽in New Zealand聽to gain a PhD in biology, who went on to a lifetime of achievement in insect study,聽has entrusted us聽with聽her聽vision of continuing important research in聽this聽field,聽including with聽critical funding for early- and mid-career researchers, and the appointment of a Chair,鈥 Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott聽said.聽聽

鈥淲e are聽deeply聽grateful聽for聽this donation to the University,聽establishing聽the聽Sydney Insect Hub. Insects sit at the centre of聽most terrestrial ecosystems聽and聽hold a聽deep fascination聽for the聽general public.聽The generosity of聽Professor聽Richards聽will allow us聽to continue her聽mission聽to contribute meaningfully to聽urgent matters聽in biodiversity,聽conservation聽and sustainability聽across聽Australia and聽globally.鈥澛

Professor聽Richards specialised in聽Australian ladybird beetles and聽New Zealand聽cave聽w膿t膩聽(crickets),聽once spending聽seven weeks underground in聽the聽Waikato caves of New Zealand,聽with only cave聽w膿t膩聽and water rats for company.聽The聽w膿t膩, which can measure up to聽35cm (from聽antennae聽tip to back legs)聽avoid聽light so聽Aola聽had to turn off her torch for extended periods and聽observe聽them in the dark.聽

She was a key figure in connecting entomology research with the scientific study and exploration of caves (speleology) in Australia and New Zealand.聽She聽studied cave crickets and glow worms in the caves of Tasmania聽and聽also聽studied fauna in聽the聽huge鈥痗aves鈥痓eneath鈥痶he鈥疦ullabor鈥疨lain,聽driving a Land Rover across Australia accompanied by two students.

She聽spent 33 years in the Biology Department at the University of New South Wales and published more than 80 papers, many as sole author.聽She聽described聽over 20 new聽species聽while making聽discoveries about insect behaviour and ecology.聽

鈥淭his donation聽allows us to build on the聽outstanding聽work聽of聽our current聽entomologists at the University聽by advancing聽insect ecology, evolution,聽genomics聽and applied entomology. It will聽also聽support聽sustainable agriculture, an issue聽Professor聽Richards strongly believed entomologists could play a leading role in,聽as well as聽biodiversity聽and biosecurity,鈥澛爏aid聽,聽Inaugural Chair of the Sydney Insect Hub.聽

鈥淗er enduring legacy will not only be聽her聽remarkable body of work that anchors modern taxonomy and natural history but聽this generous act to聽secure the future of her field.聽聽It聽is Australia鈥檚 first聽hub聽dedicated to training聽the next聽generation聽of insect scientists聽through training, scholarships,聽fellowships聽and聽grants,聽working across the full breadth of entomology.鈥

Professor聽Richards聽bequest will be applied to聽research on:

  • how insect聽pollinator聽communities聽function聽and can be harnessed for sustainable agriculture聽including biological control

  • tackling聽invasive species ecology and聽biosecurity threats, including the impact of invasive parasites on the viral landscape of聽honey bees

  • how insects perceive their world, evaluate聽options聽and translate information into action

  • how聽invertebrate communities and ecological networks persist under environmental change, and how to conserve not only聽species聽but the interactions that sustain ecosystems

  • understanding insect ecology and evolution in a changing world聽

  • advancing taxonomy, classification, natural聽history聽and species discovery.

鈥淎ola聽Richards achieved excellence in entomology at a time when the field was heavily聽male-dominated.聽She devoted聽her life to deepening our knowledge of insects聽and聽her groundbreaking research is an inspiration.聽She is truly one of the giants of Australian entomology聽and her聽legacy of excellence will聽now聽also live聽on through her generous bequest,鈥 said聽聽from the聽Faculty of Science and Sydney Insect Hub.聽

Meanwhile聽Professor聽Richards鈥櫬爂ift is already聽supporting聽entomology students聽following the completion of their higher degree by research.聽

Two beneficiaries of聽this聽funding have been聽Dr聽聽the聽only Australian scientist聽wholly聽dedicated聽to studying聽stick insects聽and聽聽Zhuzhi鈥痁hang,鈥痺ho works聽on cockroach phylogenetics聽(evolutionary relationship between organisms).聽

Dr Jones is receiving funding from the聽Aola聽Richards Bequest to聽substantially support聽his three-year National Taxonomy Research Grant Fellowship.聽

"The generous funding has allowed me to continue my research focused on discovering new species of Australian stick and leaf insects, focusing on arid adapted species."聽

Professor聽Aola聽Richards (1927鈥2021) was born in Wellington聽and trained in zoology there聽completing an MSc in 1954 and, in 1958, becoming the first woman in New Zealand to earn a PhD in biological science. She worked at UNSW for more than three decades before retiring to London in 1994. A cave w膿t膩 species,聽Miotopus聽richardsae, was named in her honour in 2018.聽

Professor聽Richards鈥 estate has contributed to two other research institutions globally,聽establishing聽an聽Aola聽Richards Fund at the Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge and the School of Biological Sciences聽at聽Te聽Herenga Waka 鈥 Victoria University of Wellington. She gifted much of her insect collection to the CSIRO.
