University statement regarding recent SRC meeting

The University of Sydney has published its response following an incident at a recent Student Representative Council meeting.

The University of Sydney鈥檚 statement is below:

鈥淎ny鈥痓ehaviour鈥痶hat mocks victim survivors or ignores the impact of trauma resulting from sexual misconduct is鈥痑bsolutely unacceptable and we are initiating an immediate inquiry. We're dedicated to creating a safe environment for our students and staff and we are formally reminding the SRC of their obligation鈥痶o manage their meetings with sensitivity and respect.鈥疶he behaviour of all participants must be in accord with our Student Charter, which outlines our expectations of student behaviour, and other relevant university policies.鈥

鈥淲hile student representative and student-led groups are independent of the University, their members are required to abide by our policies and codes of conduct and we don鈥檛 hesitate to take action鈥痠f we determine鈥痶here has been a breach.鈥

鈥淲e are deeply disappointed by what has reportedly occurred and expect higher standards from our students, everyone in our community has a responsibility to foster a鈥痳espectful鈥痑nd inclusive culture. The University has a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of bullying, harassment,鈥痝ender-based violence or discrimination and we urge anyone affected by the incident鈥痶o contact the鈥Safer Communities Office鈥痜or support. In addition our鈥痯rovides 24/7 psychological support for staff.鈥
