Fundraiser marks anniversary of NSW's oldest neighbourhood centre
Founded by the Sydney University Women鈥檚 Society in 1891, the is the oldest neighbourhood centre in NSW. Based in Redfern, the Settlement has historic ties to the University and the Women鈥檚 College.
The Settlement serves the Darlington, Redfern and Waterloo communities and has a long history of providing space and services to Aboriginal families.
The organisation provides support in the form of space for聽community events, a food bank (an important support for many during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns) and internet access. It also runs activity programs for children and teenagers.
In 2021, the Settlement marked its 130th anniversary, but plans were deferred due to COVID-19 restrictions. 聽 will take place on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at the Women鈥檚 College.
The University and wider community is invited to join the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services), the Sydney School of Education and Social Work and the Settlement to celebrate this important milestone.
This event will be an evening of wisdom, stories, celebration and learning. The evening will include a Q&A panel discussion and special guest speakers including Elders, leaders and community members.
The Settlement Youth Leaders will host, with ticket and silent auction proceeds聽 going directly to the Settlement鈥檚 Children and Youth Programs, as well as helping to reinvigorate the Edward Street Fair community celebration at the end of the year.
The event is supported by the Women's College, the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services) and the Sydney School of Education and Social Work.
There is also a strong connection to the University鈥檚 One Sydney, Many People 2021-2024 Strategy, with ties to the Nguragaingun: Culture and Community pillar.
This special event will help the Sydney University Settlement to continue its work. It聽is an opportunity to recognise and deepen the long-standing connection between the organisation and the University, strengthening ties with the local community.
