2023 MJA-Lancet Countdown report

The Heat and Health Research Centre hosted the launch event for the 2023 report of the MJA鈥揕ancet Countdown on health and climate change: sustainability needed in Australia's health care sector.

Highlights

  • Co-Led by Professor (Central Clinical School) and Professor , and supported by Wellcome, HHRC members are leading a multi-country prospective pregnancy cohort field study in India and Bangladesh, and a laboratory-based study in the Thermal Ergonomics Laboratory Climate Chamber to investigate extreme heat and maternal and child health.

  • In the BBC StoryWorks series聽The Climate and Us, Professor 聽discusses the increasing concern of extreme heat and heatwaves on human health, and how researchers at the Heat and Health Research Centre are investigating sustainable and evidenced-based solutions to keep cool and stay safe..

  • This article reports original research data demonstrating the efficacy of different low-resource cooling strategies for older adults with and without coronary artery disease during different types of heatwaves. This is the first output from a large NHMRC-funded study and shows what should and definitely should not be used in hot-humid and very hot-dry heatwaves. First author is Dr and co-senior authors are A/Prof Daniel Gagnon (Montreal Heart Institute) and Professor聽.

  • Led by Dr. , the Homelessness and Heat Emergency Activation Team (HHEATeam) have created Australia's first mobile cooling hub. This is a community initiative to keep individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness seek help and stay safe during extreme heat events. Our HeatWatch tool, developed by Dr , is used to inform the team when to implement the pop-up cooling hubs.
