Our Scholar exceeds at Oxford

2 October 2019
Celebrating our graduates鈥 achievements
Our graduates have a long-standing history of excelling at Oxford, and we are proud to be able to offer scholarships to assist them in realising their educational aspirations.

Congratulations to Luca Moretti (LLB鈥17) on being jointly awarded the Vinerian Scholarship 鈥 the prize awarded to the student (or this year students) with the highest aggregate marks in the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) at the University of Oxford.聽

Luca graduates from the BCL in 2019, with two other prizes and joins a small group of five Sydney University alumni to have won the prestigious Oxford scholarship, including the Hon Justice Andrew Bell (President of the New South Wales Court of Appeal) and the Hon Dyson Heydon AC (former Justice of the High Court of Australia).聽

Luca said he arrived at Oxford with very high expectations of the course and was pleased that those expectations were met.聽

"The ideas we were presented with were challenging, the academics were brilliant and my fellow students were uniformly impressive. I really enjoyed my year of postgraduate study and am very grateful for this opportunity and the friendships I made at Oxford.鈥澛

鈥淥xford is a remarkable place and it was wonderful to spend a year among its beautiful buildings, strange traditions and coruscating minds,聽but my time there also deepened my appreciation for the University of Sydney.鈥

鈥淎ustralians' respect for foreign postgraduate qualifications is one of the few aspects of聽the cultural cringe which remains alive and healthy but it is very clear that聽Sydney Law School provides an outstanding legal education and that聽its students are, in my experience, capable of competing anywhere. For that reason, while receiving the Vinerian Scholarship was a very pleasant surprise, it was聽made all the more pleasant by seeing how well other Sydney students had done in their subjects in the BCL."

Luca was awarded the Charles Herbert Currey Memorial Scholarship and the Hannah Fullerton Scholarship by the University of Sydney, which assisted his studies at Oxford.聽

鈥淚 am very grateful for the support that was given to me by the University of Sydney. This took the form not only聽of a first-rate undergraduate education that聽prepared me for further study, but also聽encouragement through the application process聽from academics like Professors John Carter,聽Sheelagh McCracken,聽John Stumbles and Joellen Riley and importantly practical financial聽assistance by way of the university鈥檚 travelling scholarships, for which I am particularly thankful.鈥
