The course resolutions detailed in this page apply to all courses included in the table below under section 1 (course codes).
These resolutions must be read in conjunction with applicable University By-laws, Rules and policies including (but not limited to) the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2014 (the 'Coursework Rule'), the Coursework Policy 2021 (the 'Coursework Policy'), the Learning and Teaching Policy 2024, the Resolutions of the Faculty, University of Sydney (Student Academic Appeals) Rule 2021, the Academic Integrity Policy 2022 and the Academic Integrity Procedures 2022. (1)ÌýÌý The attendance pattern for this course may be full-time or part-time according to candidate choice.
(1)ÌýÌý Bachelor of Music
(²¹)Ìý The Bachelor of Music is available without a stream or with the following streams:
(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý Composition;
(ii)ÌýÌýÌý Music Education; or
(iii)ÌýÌý Performance.
(²ú)Ìý Completion of a stream is not a requirement for the Bachelor of Music.
(³¦)Ìý Candidates not undertaking a stream must complete a program or a major.
(2)ÌýÌý Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
(²¹)Ìý The Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies is available with the following streams:
(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý Composition; or
(ii)ÌýÌýÌý Performance
(²ú)Ìý Completion of a stream is a requirement of the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.
(3)ÌýÌý The requirements for each stream are specified in Table A for the Bachelor of Music, and the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
(1)ÌýÌý The Head of School and Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music has authority over any matter concerned with the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies not otherwise dealt with in these resolutions.
(1)ÌýÌý All candidates for admission must:
(²¹)Ìý present a portfolio of work and attend an interview, or
(²ú)Ìý undertake a practical audition in a nominated instrument or voice.
(2)ÌýÌý Except for students admitted under the Creative Arts Special Admission Scheme, admission is on the basis of:
(²¹)Ìý a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents);
(²ú)Ìý tertiary study; or
(³¦)Ìý an approved preparation program.
(3)ÌýÌý English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.
(4)ÌýÌý Special admission pathways are open for mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
(5)ÌýÌý Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking. ÌýDetails of admission policies are found in the Coursework Rule and the Coursework Policy.
(6)ÌýÌý Offers to the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music (Composition), and Bachelor of Music (Performance) may be made to exceptional students under the Creative Arts Special Admission Scheme. Details of the requirements for this scheme are found in the Coursework Policy.
(1)ÌýÌý The units of study that may be taken for each course are set out in:
(²¹)Ìý Table A of the Bachelor of Music and the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies;
(²ú)Ìý Table S of the Shared Pool of Undergraduate Degrees; and
(³¦)Ìý Table O of the Shared Pool of Undergraduate Degrees.
(2)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music without a stream, candidates must complete 192 credit points in total comprising:
(²¹)ÌýÌý 48 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A comprising:
Ìýi.Ìý24 credit points of Music Skills units of study; and
ii.Ìý24 credit points of Analytical, Historical and Cultural Studies units of study.Ìý
(²ú)Ìý12 credit points of additional core units of study comprising Performance or Ensemble units of study from Table A; and
(³¦)ÌýÌý 12 credit points of Final Year Project units of study as specified in Table A;
(d)ÌýÌý One of the following:
(i) a 72 credit point Program as defined in Section 7 and as specified in Table A;
Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý or
(ii) a 48 credit point major in Musicology as defined in Section 7 and 12 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A;

(e)ÌýÌýÌý One or more of the following where appropriate:
(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý a 48 credit point major from Table S;

(iii)ÌýÌý elective units from Table A, Table S or a maximum of 12 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O.
(3)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music (Music Education), candidates must complete 192 credit points comprising:
(²¹)ÌýÌý 60 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A; and
(²ú)ÌýÌý a 0 credit point unit of study, EDLN2000 Lantite undergraduate; and
(³¦)ÌýÌý 96 credit points of Music Education units of study from Table A; and
(d)ÌýÌý 24 credit points of Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ Area units of study as listed and defined in Section 7 below and as specified in Table A; and
(e)ÌýÌý where appropriate, elective units from Table A, Table S including a maximum of 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O.
(4)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music (Composition), candidates must complete 192 credit points comprising:
(a) 48 credit points of Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ units of study as specified in Table A;
(b) 48 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A comprising;
i. 24 credit points of Music Skills units of study; and
ii. 24 credit points of Analytical, Historical and Cultural Studies units of study.
(c) A 0 credit point unit of study, MCGY0000 Australian Indigenous Music;
(d) 48 credit points of additional core units of study as specified in Table A comprising;
i. 36 credit points of Composition Studies units of study; and
ii. 12 credit points of Performance or Ensemble units of study.
(e) 12 credit points of Final Year Project units of study as specified in Table A and
(f) Either:
i.ÌýÌýA 36 credit point minor from Table A or Table S; or
ii. 36 credit points of elective units of study from Table A and/or Table S, including a maximum of 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O
(5)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music (Performance), candidates must complete 192 credit points comprising:
(²¹)ÌýÌý 48 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A; and
(²ú)ÌýÌý a 0 credit point unit of study, MCGY0000 Australian Indigenous Music; and
(³¦)ÌýÌýÌý 72 credit points of Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ Area units of study as listed and defined in Section 7 below and as specified in Table A; and
(d)ÌýÌý 12 credit points of project units of study; and
(e)Ìý a minimum of 30 credit points of Ensemble / Performance units of study as specified in Table A; and
(f)Ìý additional Core and Ensemble or Performance units of study as required by the Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ area and specified in Table A; and
(g)ÌýÌý where appropriate, elective units from Table A, Table S, including a maximum of 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O.
(6)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition), a candidate must complete 240 credit points, comprising:
(²¹)Ìý48 credit points of Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ units of study as specified in Table A;
(²ú)Ìý36 credit points of core units of study as specified in Table A comprising;
i.Ìý18 credit points of Music Skills units of study; and
ii.Ìý18 credit points of Analytical, Historical and Cultural Studies units of study.
(c) A 0 credit point unit of study, MCGY0000 Australian Indigenous Music;
(d) 54 credit points of additional core units of study as specified in Table A comprising:
i. 48 credit points of Composition Studies units of study; and
ii. 6 credit points of Performance or Ensemble units of study
(e)ÌýÌý 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O; and
(f)ÌýÌýÌý a major from Table S; and
(g)ÌýÌý a minimum of 24 credit points at 4000-level from the Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ or Table S, including a research, community, industry or entrepreneurship project of at least 12 credit points and up to 36 credit points.
(h)ÌýÌý where appropriate, elective units of study from Table A or Table S.
(7)ÌýÌý To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Performance), a candidate must complete 240 credit points, comprising:
(²¹)ÌýÌý 102 credit points of Specialisation units of study; and
(²ú)ÌýÌý 36 credit points of core units of study; and
(³¦)ÌýÌýÌý a 0 credit point unit of study, MCGY0000 Australian Indigenous Music; and
(d)ÌýÌý 6 credit points of units of study in the Open Learning Environment as specified in Table O; and
(e)ÌýÌý a majorÌý from Table S; and
(f)Ìý Ìýa minimum of 24 credit points at 4000 level from Table A or Table S, including a community, industry or entrepreneurship project of at least 12 credit points and up to 36 credit points.

(²¹)Ìý Honours is available to candidates who complete an alternative set of units of study in the final year.
(²ú)Ìý Admission to honours is by permission of the Program or Honours Coordinator after candidates have completed 144 credit points of study.
(³¦)Ìý Admission to honours requires:
(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 75 in relevant 2000-level and above units;
(ii)ÌýÌýÌý a minimum average mark of 75 in Analysis, History and Culture Studies units; and
(iii)ÌýÌý for candidates in a stream, the completion of stream specific requirements.
(d)Ìý Specific stream requirements include:
Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý (i)Ìý Ìý Ìý for the Bachelor of Music (Composition), a minimum average mark of 75 in Composition 5 and 6;
Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý (ii)Ìý Ìý ÌýÌýfor the Bachelor of Music (Performance), a minimum average mark of 75 in Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ 4 and 6.
(e)Ìý To qualify for honours, candidates must complete 192 credit points including 48 credit points of Honours units of study.
(f)ÌýÌý The grade of honours will be determined by an honours mark calculated from work in the honours units of study as specified in:
(i)ÌýÌýÌýÌý these resolutions; and
(ii)ÌýÌýÌý the resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; or
(iii)ÌýÌý the resolutions of the relevant faculty.
(2)ÌýÌý Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
(²¹)Ìý Honours is available for candidates who:
(i)Ìý meet the admission requirements for a Bachelor Honours degree after completing requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies provided Ìýin section 6; or
(ii) transfer to the Bachelor of Music before completing requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies as specified in section 6, and meet the honours admission requirements provided in section 8(1).ÌýÌý
(1)ÌýÌý Bachelor of Music
(²¹)Ìý Candidates who have completed requirements in section 6, but who have not completed requirements for honours in section 8, will be awarded the Bachelor of Music.
(²ú)Ìý Candidates who have completed requirements in section 6 and requirements for honours in section 8, will be awarded honours in classes ranging from First Class to Third Class as set out in the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
(2)ÌýÌý Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies
(²¹)Ìý Candidates for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies will be awarded a separate testamur for each degree completed.
(i)Ìý Candidates who have completed requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition) will be awarded a Bachelor of Music (Composition) and a Bachelor of Advanced Studies.
(ii) Candidates who have completed requirements for the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Performance) Ìýwill be awarded a Bachelor of Music (Performance) and a Bachelor of Advanced Studies.
(1)ÌýÌý Cross-institutional study is available in this course under conditions specified in the Resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
(1)ÌýÌý The Sydney Conservatorium of Music encourages candidates in this course to participate in international exchange programs as set out in the resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
(1)ÌýÌý Credit transfer is subject to the provisions of the Coursework Policy and the Resolutions of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music or, in the case of a major or minor offered by another faculty in Table S, any relevant resolutions of that faculty.
(1)ÌýÌý A candidate may transfer from the Bachelor of Music (Performance) and elect to complete the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Performance) or transfer from the Bachelor of Music (Composition) and complete the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition).
(a) Candidates wishing to transfer must do so before the start of year 2 of their candidature to receive full credit for work completed in the Bachelor of Music.
(2)ÌýÌý A candidate may transfer from the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies and complete the Bachelor of Music with the Performance or Composition stream.
(²¹)Ìý Candidates who commenced before 1 July 2024 may transfer up to the end of year 4 of their candidature.Ìý They will receive full credit, including 60 credit points for work taken in the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies, towards Principal ¸ßÇ帣ÀûƬ and Core in the Bachelor of Music.Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý Ìý
(²ú)Ìý Candidates who commenced after 1 July 2024 may transfer at any time.Ìý They will receive a maximum of 144 credit points of credit for work taken in the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies.
(3)ÌýÌý A candidate may transfer from the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music (Performance) or Bachelor of Music (Composition) or the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Performance) or Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition)and complete the equivalent program, major or principal study area in the Bachelor of Music (Music Education).
(²¹)Ìý Candidates wishing to transfer must attend an interview with the Bachelor of Music (Music Education) program leader.
(²ú)Ìý Candidates who are permitted to transfer:
(i)Ìý must complete at least 48 credit points; and
(ii)Ìý will receive credit for work completed in equivalent units of study in the Bachelor of Music , Bachelor of Music (Performance) or Bachelor of Music (Composition), or Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies(Performance) or the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition).
(4)ÌýÌý A candidate may transfer from the Bachelor of Music (Music Education) and complete the equivalent program, major or principal study area of the Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music (Performance) or Bachelor of Music (Composition), or the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Performance) or Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Composition).
(²¹)Ìý Candidates wishing to transfer must attend a practical audition and/or an interview.Ìý
