Technology and its influence over us, our systems and how we live is continuing to increase 鈥 and showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.
Almost all the systems that we rely on as a society have become dependent on technology and how it functions, from storing work files on an online drive to using an application on a smart phone for banking.
But how do we keep these technologies safe and secure?
Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting systems, networks and programs from digital attacks. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information; extorting money from users; or interrupting normal business processes.
鈥淐ybersecurity comprises of all the technologies and practices that keep computer systems and electronic data safe,鈥 explains Dr聽Qiang Tang, a cybersecurity researcher within the School of Computer Science.
鈥淐ybersecurity is relevant in all areas of information technology, considering critical issues of confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, availability and more in each different domain.鈥
The University of Sydney's聽Master of Cybersecurity聽is designed to provide you with a vast array of knowledge in fundamental cybersecurity concepts and future directions of the industry.
The degree will teach you analytical and technical skills needed to detect and assess cybersecurity threats, essential knowledge on privacy and security regulations as well as the ability to communicate findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
鈥淥ur Master of Cybersecurity is taught by experts in the field, who will teach you leading defence techniques and cutting-edge developments in the field,鈥 says Dr Tang.
"Learning these skills will allow you to assess networked systems鈥 security and determine whether there are gaps that need to be filled or adjustments to be made.
鈥淎s part of the degree, students also have the opportunity to speciaise in a particular area of cybersecurity, including聽cloud security,听cryptography and blockchains, or聽data and information security聽鈥 all three are incredibly fascinating areas to study.
鈥淲ith the growing need for professionals in the discipline, graduates from our cybersecurity degree will be very sought after within industry.鈥
The field of cybersecurity and information technology is vast, complex and continuing to grow at a rapid rate 鈥揂ustralians alone are expected to spend $7.6 billion by the end of 2024.
With over 17,000 additional professionals expected to be needed in cybersecurity positions within the next five years, now is the perfect time to explore a career in the field.
Dr Tang says those who complete the one and a half year degree will be able to utilise their specialised skills across a diverse range of careers.
鈥淐ybersecurity engineers, analysts and consultants are in high demand along with the more specialised cryptography, blockchain and cloud security engineers,鈥 says Dr Tang.
鈥淭he high demand for new professionals across the field makes it an exciting time to become involved in the industry.鈥
