Leading computer scientists recognised for global contributions

Honouring the outstanding work of two computer scientists
Exceptional contributions to the fields of services computing and distributed computing have seen two academics from the School of Computer Science recognised by their peers with prestigious awards.
Professor , Head of the School of Computer Science, has been awarded the TSCVC Research Innovation Award for outstanding innovations in the field of services computing by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
IEEE is the world鈥檚 largest association of technical professionals dedicated to the technical and educational advancement of electrical and electronic engineering, telecommunications, computer science and related disciplines.
Bouguettaya has been recognised for his innovative, pioneering and lasting contributions to services computing for over two decades, most recently in the areas of cloud services and Internet of Things (IoT).
鈥淚鈥檓 extremely humbled to have received this honour and believe it鈥檚 the ultimate recognition of the outstanding work my research group, including those students past and present, have undertaken in this field for over 20 years,鈥� says Professor Bouguettaya.
鈥淔rom smart textile to drones and autonomous cars, we鈥檙e exploring how best to make IoT useful by using the service paradigm and leveraging the ubiquitous use of sensors in everything,
鈥淭his award has only spurred us on, it鈥檚 exciting to lead research at the intersection of these concepts.鈥�
In a further accolade for the School of Computer Science, Professor聽聽has been accepted to join the Academia Europaea (The Academy of Europe) for his ongoing research into parallel and distributed computing, sustainable computing data centres and also IoT.
Academia Europaea functions as a pan-European academy that promotes the advancement and propagation of excellence across all fields of scholarly enquiry, including the areas of computer science and engineering.
Zomaya is one of 128 newly elected members to the academy and the third from the聽Faculty of Engineering,聽following the election of its Dean, Professor聽聽in 2008 and Professor聽聽in 2016.
鈥淭o be elected to the membership of Academia Europaea is a privilege and I am honoured to be joining the ranks of an elite group of scholars,鈥� says Professor Zomaya, Director of the聽Centre for Distributed and High-Performance Computing.
鈥淚t is also a recognition of my work and contributions to the European research scene over the years, which is now exploring how best to use edge computing 鈥� the practice of processing data near the edge of a network where data is being generated 鈥� 聽to build distributed applications that close the gap between data, interpretation and action.鈥�
