University of Sydney photonics engineers Professor聽聽and Professor聽 will collaborate with Thales Australia on research proposing new techniques to achieve high-resolution beams using reduced hardware.

This technology could be applied to secure communications and autonomous vehicles, growing the automation and sensing systems market sector, as well as increasing Australian national security.

"The project is focused on exploiting integrated photonic advancements to develop innovative technologies to realise chip scale optical beamforming for light detection and ranging with low power consumption and high resolution,鈥 said Professor Yi, from the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies.

鈥淜ey outcomes of this research program will enable its use across a host of new commercial and personalised automation applications.鈥

This grant was one of 14, worth a total of $6 million, recently announced by Minister for Education Dan Tehan. The grants fund cutting-edge research to keep Australians safe and ensure a strong economy.

鈥淭he Australian Research Council鈥檚 Linkage Projects scheme brings together higher education and industry to conduct research into pressing issues that affect Australians,鈥 said Minister Tehan.

鈥淭hese collaborations will make a difference to the lives of everyday Australians.鈥
