Features

SafeZone connects you directly with Protective Services, emergency services and the University's support and wellbeing offerings. It provides our students and staff quick access to help through a simple, one-tap interface, saving you time in the event of an emergency, if first aid is required, or if you just need general assistance around campus.

SafeZone also sends real-time safety alerts through app-based push notifications and via SMS, including location-specific information depending on which campus you're at or building you're in.

Students and staff who elect not to download the app and are not registered in SafeZone will still receive SMS alerts from the University in the event of a critical incident or emergency. Make sure your details are up to date in (students) or (staff).

Coverage and locations

SafeZone is available in any region that the University of Sydney places a geofence.听Users can raise alerts and use the full functionality of the app if they are within a University of Sydney region. When a user tries to raise an alert outside of a designated University of Sydney region, the app will then ask the user to call 000 and connect them with emergency services.

SafeZone works across the following University of Sydney campuses:

  • Camperdown/Darlington
  • Cumberland
  • Camden
  • Mallett Street
  • Sydney College of the Arts
  • Surry Hills
  • Sydney Conservatorium of Music
  • Westmead

As we roll out SafeZone at more of our campuses, including our satellite sites in regional areas, they will be added to this page. Users can also browse regions and locations where SafeZone is available within the app via a list or map view.

When to use SafeZone

When you raise an alert, SafeZone securely shares your real-time location with Protective Services, enabling them to dispatch the nearest security personnel, monitor nearby CCTV, and coordinate with emergency services for the quickest possible assistance.

The Emergency button (red button) should be used:

  • If you feel threatened
  • If you have been assaulted or are the victim of a robbery
  • If you are injured or require urgent medical assistance
  • If you see another person in any of the above situations who needs help.

Use the First Aid call (green button) if you, or someone else requires first aid treatment. A qualified first aid officer will be dispatched to your location to assist.

The Call Security button (blue button) should be used:

  • If you want a safety escort after dark
  • If you identify a potential security or safety concern (e.g. a blocked fire exit, leaking fire hydrant, missing fire extinguisher)
  • If you are uncomfortable making an emergency alert.

If you鈥檙e working alone in a lab with chemicals, studying late in a quiet space, or walking across campus at night, you can set a timed check-in. If you don鈥檛 check out when the timer ends, Protective Services is automatically notified so they can make contact and ensure you鈥檙e safe. When you're checked in, your location is shared with Protective Services.

Check in is not required or expected for regular students and staff.

Beyond emergencies, SafeZone provides quick access to mental health and wellbeing services, helping you connect with the right support when you鈥檙e feeling stressed, anxious or overwhelmed.

Using the Wellbeing Support button (yellow button) will connect you with the relevant support services here at the University and externally.

A central hub for students, helping you access campus services, campus maps, timetables, a wide range of helpful contacts, and general updates and information.

A 24/7 app for international students, providing on-demand access to wellbeing and safety professionals and resources.
