During this time of wars and persecution, forced migration continues to occur - and to grow. This unit focuses on nineteenth and twentieth century forced migrations, to historicise our deeply interconnected world. We examine forced migration through themes of colonialism, postcolonialism, and empire as well as the multiple transnational influences that have shaped social, cultural, economic, and political developments. In using a variety of primary and secondary sources, this unit ultimately situates forced migration within historical discussions about race, gender, class, and nation, and the ways in which immigrant communities engaged and contested these histories of power and violence.
