Research students: to know what to expect from their supervisor and coordinator, and what is expected of them.

Postgraduate coordinators: to understand what is needed for proper oversight and support for research students.

• Students have at least two supervisors.
• The lead supervisor helps guide your research, monitor progress, and provide feedback.
• Other supervisors can provide specific expertise or industry connections.

Supervisors are expected to:

• Help you identify, access, and organise knowledge.
• Assess your English communication skills before your probationary period ends.
• Provide timely and constructive written feedback on your work.
• If your progress is unsatisfactory:
  • formally advise you in writing, and
  • explain necessary improvements.
• Help you to make sure your thesis is in a suitable form for examination when submitted.
• Discuss available support services with you, including:
  • health services
  • inclusion and disability support
  • counselling
  • Learning Hub

Yes. Supervisory arrangements should:

• be flexible
• adapt to whether you are a full-time or part-time student
• accommodate absences
• adjust and change with you if your research direction changes
• be reviewed by the postgraduate coordinator throughout your candidature as needed.

The Supervisor Register helps us to monitor the quality and capacity of supervision for higher degree by research students.  It records:

• the number of active supervisors
• students per supervisor
• any supervisors exceeding their workload limits.

This helps monitor the quality and capacity of supervision.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Researcher Training) maintains the Register and reports annually on key statistics
