More affordable student housing in Darlington

2 February 2021
Accommodation for 336 students and visiting academics
A group of University of Sydney owned terraces on Darlington Road will be refurbished as part of a $40 million project designed to provide safer and more affordable accommodation for students.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes today announced the NSW Government has given the green light for the project which will provide single and double room accommodation for 336 students and visiting academics.

鈥淭he Darlington Terraces will be renovated and four new buildings built, providing new and improved student housing in the heart of the inner-city and within minutes of public transport,鈥 Mr Stokes said.

鈥淭his $40 million transformation will also create 95 much-needed construction jobs during this crucial time, with works to begin immediately.

鈥淲hile COVID-19 may have halted the flow of international students to our city, our borders will reopen at some stage. University accommodation is also widely used by students from regional NSW and other states so it鈥檚 important we continue planning for our future.鈥

University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Stephen Garton has welcomed the approval.

It鈥檚 important for students to have access to affordable housing on or near campus, so this is really welcome news.
Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Stephen Garton

鈥淭he cost of housing in Sydney can be prohibitive, which is why we have worked so hard with the NSW Government to provide a range of affordable housing options for our community.

鈥淲hat is especially pleasing about this project are the broader benefits for the local area including new landscaping, park upgrades and public art.鈥

The proposal involves the refurbishment of Darlington Road terraces which currently houses 151 students. Four new buildings, between two and four storeys, will be built behind the terraces.
