Professor Simon Bronitt appointed Head of School and Dean of Law

welcomed the appointment: 鈥淧rofessor Bronitt is a distinguished scholar whose research interests include terrorism law and human rights; comparative and criminal law; covert policing; family violence and mental health policing. I know and the wider University very much look forward to working with Professor Bronitt when he takes up his role next year.鈥�
Professor Bronitt joins the University of Sydney from the University of Queensland where he has been Professor of Law and Deputy Head and Deputy Dean (Research) of the TC Beirne School of Law since 2014.
He was previously Director of the national ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security hosted by Griffith University, and before that spent 20 years at the Australian National University Law School where he held a number of senior leadership roles.
鈥淚 am delighted to be joining one of the world鈥檚 premier law schools and I hope that under my leadership the Sydney Law School continues to make significant and lasting contributions to Australia鈥檚 judiciary, politics and public life,鈥� Professor Bronitt said.
Professor Bronitt will take up his new role in July,聽succeeding聽 who finishes in the role at the end of this year.
鈥淧rofessor Joellen Riley has done an聽outstanding聽job, not only as Head of School and Dean, but as a University citizen more generally.聽We owe Professor Riley an enormous debt of gratitude for all she has done at the Sydney Law School and we are extremely grateful for her visionary leadership, tenacity, generosity and commitment to excellence. She has made a significant contribution to such projects as: negotiating a new Enterprise Agreement, Westmead IVF and a multitude of other committees and projects. I know senior university colleagues more generally and her colleagues in the School join me in wishing her well for the next phase of her career. She leaves the School in very good shape,鈥� the Vice-Chancellor added.
