The Rothwell gift supports the Rothwell Chair in Architectural Design Leadership and a comprehensive research program advancing architectural design and urbanism, reflecting the University of Sydney鈥檚 commitment to excellence in research and education.
Atelier Bow Wow (co-Chairs 2024-2026) , represented by Momoyo Kaijima, Yoshiharu Tsukamoto and Yoichi Tamai lead programs structured around urban-rural connections and communities, aimed at elevating the standards of architectural and urbanism practice within the School.
The firm鈥檚 projects, spanning from residential buildings to public spaces, are characterised by a commitment to sustainability, social impact and an understanding of human behaviour in the built environment.
Japan and Australia share a common developmental history and, through our appointment at the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, we aim to delve deeper into understanding the outcomes of this shared past and uncover pathways that lead towards impactful design.
Rothwell Program Co-Chairs 2024 - 2026
Committed educators and Pritzker Prize-winning architects Anne Lacaton and Jean Philippe Vassal worked with students, researchers and practitioners over three years (2021-2023), exploring urban conditions and how to use architecture to create environments that improve people鈥檚 quality of life.
Living well in the big city is the most important challenge of our time and our generation.
This issue involves many crucial topics and challenges, such as climate change, sustainability, energy savings, cost of the land, densification, affordability, integration, social equality and, simply, quality of life. Any strategy for making the city starts from the concept of quality of housing for all.
Rothwell Program Co-Chairs 2021 - 2023
The Rothwell Chair Postdoctoral Associate is a three year appointment to support and contribute to our Rothwell Co-Chairs' research agenda and to conduct work on independent research projects related to the Rothwell Chair Program.

Sophie Lanigan works across research, design and climate adaptation. Her work investigates how architecture and design can mediate rising seas by operating across shifting boundaries between land and sea, engaging both human and non-human actors in the reimagining of coastal urban environments. She currently teaches the master鈥檚 studio 鈥楲iquid Parliament鈥 at the University of Sydney, which extends this line of enquiry.
She recently completed a PhD in Architecture at the University of Cambridge, holds an MA in History and Critical Thinking from the Architectural Association, London and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney.
